Inspired by Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story takes the most famous star-crossed lovers, and places them in the vibrant battleground of New York City in the 1950s. In the West Side of the city, two gangs fight for the control of the streets: young immigrants from Puerto Rico, the Sharks, and a white gang, the Jets.
In the midst of the deep-seated rivalry between these two gangs, Tony goes at a dance in the gym where he meets Maria, the sister of the Shark's leader, Bernardo. They instantly fall in love with each other.
Maria and Tony quickly discover that ancient grudges are no match for true love. Their warring factions, however, refuse to back down, and the “rumbles”, romance, and resentment lead the bloody path to the lovers’ ultimate, tragic conclusion.
